Top tips for a stress-free move
This guide, created in partnership with Zoopla, gives you clear steps, real timings and practical advice to help you stay in control, from the first week of planning to the day you unpack your final box.
1. Planning your move (6 weeks before)
The first step to a smooth move is choosing your moving method. Ideally, decide this six weeks before your moving date so that you are fully aware of the costs of moving house, though you may plan even earlier. Your three main options are:
- Full-service removal company - A removal company packs, loads, transports and unpacks everything for you. This is the most convenient option, but also the most expensive.
- Partial removal service - This option offers a balance between cost and effort. You handle the packing and unpacking yourself, while the removal company loads and transports your belongings.
- DIY move - You organise everything yourself, including van hire, packing materials and extra help. This option keeps the cost of moving home low but requires more time and effort.
2. Preparing to move (4-6 weeks before)
With your moving method chosen, it’s time to start preparing to move. Here’s what to focus on:
a. Get organised (4-6 weeks before)
- Confirm your moving date with your removal company or, if you’re doing it yourself, secure your van hire.
- Order boxes, bubble wrap and tape early so you’re not rushing later, the sooner you start decluttering and packing the less stress in the run up to moving day.
- If you need time off work, request it now to make sure it’s approved.
b. Tie up loose ends (2-3 weeks before)
- Contact your gas, electric and water suppliers to arrange switch-over dates.
- Set up mail forwarding and inform relevant parties of your new address.
- Transfer services including broadband, council tax and TV licence.
- If you have children or pets, arrange for their care on moving day.

c. Informing relevant parties (1-2 weeks before)
- If moving to a new area, register with a new local GP surgery.
- Inform your local council of your move date so they can close your council tax account correctly.
- Update the address on your banking and insurance accounts to keep everything secure and up to date.
d. Final Prep (1-2 days before)
- If you are taking your fridge or freezer, defrost it at least 24 hours before moving day.
- Disconnect appliances like washing machines and dishwashers in advance.
- Final packing - check all boxes are clearly labelled with the room name and contents.
- Pack a “moving day essentials box” with items you’ll need.
3. Moving Day
Use this simple moving day checklist to keep everything running smoothly on your moving day.
a. Preparing your old home:
Give yourself time for a final clean of your old home and check each room, cupboards and outdoor space before handing over the keys. Make sure all rooms, storage spaces and outdoor areas are left in good condition.
b. Loading up:
Once your removal team arrives, start loading the van. Before leaving, walk through the property one more time to make sure nothing is left behind.
c. Settle into your new home:
When you reach your new home, start by assembling the beds so you’re set for the night. Then unpack priority areas like the kitchen and bathroom so you can settle in quickly.
4. Moving into your new home
If your new home is priced above £125,000, you may need to pay Stamp Duty. Your solicitor or mortgage adviser will confirm this and let you know when payment is due. You should also look to do the following as soon as you can:
- Submit accurate move-in meter readings to your new utility suppliers as soon as possible.
- Begin updating your address. Here are some key ones to prioritise:
- Electoral register
- Bank and insurance companies
- Driver’s license and vehicle registration
- Subscription services
- Medical records
- Pet’s microchip (if applicable)
